Thanks, really interesting to read your tips and advice.

Personally being a bit of a techy myself, I think what lies beneath the page is (maybe not as important) but certainly a major factor in how good a site design is.

If I see a site I like, I always 'view source'. This isn't to mean that sites always have to validate, but I think an awareness of the important principles of good web design and semantic markup is essential.

To be honest, I don't generally look at the underlying code when assessing a website (though I agree that I probably should). I certainly wouldn't be concerned if a site didn't validate.

I think that readers are able to look at the code themselves to see how certain things are done - and improve on it if necessary!

There are some perfectly coded sites out there that look really awful :-)

I was looking at some of these web showcase sites recently (not Design Shack).

Most if not all or the published entries were graphic heavy and I did wonder how many of these (despite nearly all them having CSS in their titles) actually bothered to look at the underlying code. Some entries were even built on CSS frameworks.

It's amazing how many of them insisted that submitted entries validated correctly. Every dog on design street knows that there are plenty of CSS selectors - moz and webkit - that are perfectly acceptable but nevertheless don't validate as correct CSS.
