Feeds, Articles & More

We’ll be making a few changes around here over the coming weeks, aiming at turning Design Shack into a far better resource for designers around the world:

• We’ve hired an editor. Our new writer will be making regular news posts, and writing some fantastic tutorials and inspirational roundups. Introductions to come shortly!
• We’re merging our feeds. Over the next couple of days, we are merging all our feeds into one. You’ll now receive all our new CSS gallery entries, news, and tutorials through one RSS feed. If you’re not happy with this, just let us know via email!
• More freebies! We’re teaming up with a few designers and developers to give away more free themes, graphics and scripts through the site.

I’m really looking forward to turning Design Shack into an even more inspiration place to visit! Here’s to the future.

RSS Feed Changes

With the new design and move to WordPress, there are a couple of changes to note regarding RSS feeds. We’re operating two main feeds as before – one for the CSS Gallery, and one for Articles and Community News. If you’re an existing subscriber to the news feed, you’ll now automatically start to receive community news posts.

If you’d rather not receive community news updates, simply head over to our feeds page and subscribe to the ‘Articles Only’ RSS feed. I hope that you’ll find the new content useful, and am looking forward to keeping your RSS reader updated with daily inspiration!

Onwards and Upwards

Design Shack launched proudly in 2003 and has been gradually growing and expanding ever since. Over the past 6 years the site has gained a fantastic readership, I’ve had the chance to meet some great people, and certainly hope that you’ve been a little inspired by the articles and designs we’ve featured.

2009 marks the start of a refresh for Design Shack, and I’m incredibly excited about what the year has in store. The previous site design has been in place for a couple of years and, whilst I was thoroughly pleased with it at the time, I felt that a shift towards a more professional style was required.

Changing for the Better

First of all, a huge thank you to the hundreds of people who responded to our survey – we’ve had some great suggestions of improvements to the site. The survey will be running for the next few days before we announce the winner of the contest so if you haven’t filled it in yet, please do!

After hearing what you had to say, a few minor design and functionality changes to the site have been made. From the annoying fact you had to click twice to get to a featured site, to the scroll bar in the middle of our homepage – we’ve listened. Here are some of the changes that have been made today:

1. We have placed more visual emphasis on news and tutorials
2. Designs are now updated twice daily
3. We are increasing our regular CSS gallery updates to 4 per day
4. We are aiming to post more regular news and tutorials – so you can get your inspiration and news all in one place
5. You can now search by colour or layout from the top of the homepage
6. We are accepting reader submitted news articles
7. Only one click is required to get to a featured website
8. … and quite a few more random improvements!

We hope that some of your niggles have been fixed and you’ll enjoy Design Shack even more!

Express Submission

We have been testing a new way to submit your site to Design Shack recently, and it has been very well received. Express submission guarantees a 24 hour review of your website, and we will provide a personal response via email. The price was $10, and is now only $7. If you’re looking for a way to have your website reviewed quickly then this is it!

We today passed the mark of 1000 CSS designs featured in our gallery. Thank you to all those who keep submitting their websites and to our loyal readers looking for inspiration. Here’s to hitting the 2000 mark next year!
