I really like the soft abstract background on this site and the rounded content area with its transparent border. The blue color scheme works great with the grays and makes for a really classy looking page. Overall, a refreshingly different design!

This is the online portfolio of web designer Blake Allen. This site design is all about one thing: typography. It is the primary, and nearly the only, design element on the home page. The simple, Helvetica-centric page uses high contrast black and white content and varying font sizes to distinguish content into a clear visual hierarchy.

This design features a large slideshow as the primary visual. The bright colors stand out really well against the muted gray background. Notice that the little text above the slideshow has a letterpress effect but still remains live. An excellent use of CSS to create traditional Photoshop text effects.

The online portfolio of a UX designer from London. This design is super minimal featuring little more than an Apple display and some text. However, the layout was handled very well and the reduced content really draws your eyes to the scrolling portfolio.

A lovingly crafted site with a huge background image, and some really interesting navigation. The typography used in headings and the navigation bar works really well, and adds flair to the design. My only complaint would be that the text used in the main body areas is a little difficult to read. Other than that, a great example of creative background usage.
